What is LED High Bay Light ?

LED highbay lights are designed to illuminate large areas with high ceilings. There are two main categories: high bay and low bay lights, with the main difference being the ceiling height at which they are installed. Generally, fixtures that are mounted at a height of more than 12 feet and have a wattage of more than 100W (10,000lm) are referred to as led industrial lights.

High bay lighting is the ideal solution in locations where large interior spaces need to be illuminated. Considering that locations such as manufacturing facilities, gymnasiums, warehouses, large department stores, and factories typically cover a large amount of vertical and horizontal space, powerful lighting is needed to provide the proper level of illumination for adequate lighting.

Compared to traditional incandescent lamps, led industrial lights produce powerful illumination over long distances, improving visibility and focusing light more directly. For this reason, high bay lighting fixtures are often mounted from the ceiling via hooks, chains or pendants, or fastened directly to the ceiling to provide illumination for these applications.

Industries and facilities requiring high bay lighting include, but are not limited to: warehouses, storage rooms, garages, industrial facilities (e.g., shops, processing plants, food processing plants), manufacturing facilities, school and university gymnasiums, municipal facilities (e.g., train stations, recreation centers), and commercial applications (e.g., supermarkets).

Why Choose LED High Bay Light?

DURABILITY AND ADAPTABILITY: LED industrial lights and lanterns have excellent durability and waterproof performance, which is suitable for a variety of harsh industrial environments, such as factories, warehouses and workshops. Whether it is high temperature, low temperature, humidity or dusty environment, led industrial lights can work stably and reliably, and are not easily affected by the external environment.

Low Maintenance Cost: The long life of led lamps reduces the frequency of lamp replacement, which lowers the maintenance cost and labor cost. This saves companies a lot of money and improves productivity.

Environmental protection and energy saving: LED industrial and mining lamps do not contain mercury and other harmful substances, and do not produce UV and infrared radiation, which reduces the harm to the environment and human body. The low energy consumption of LED lamps can significantly reduce energy consumption, which helps to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

High-quality lighting: LED industrial and mining lamps and lanterns provide uniform, high-quality lighting, ensuring that the work area is fully illuminated, improving work efficiency and safety.

Fast startup and no noise: LED industrial light and lanterns have a very short startup time, reaching full power illumination almost instantly without warming up, suitable for places where lamps and lanterns need to be switched on and off frequently. In addition, led luminaires have no hum or other noise, providing a quiet and comfortable working environment.

Intelligent control: LED lamps and lanterns can be remotely controlled and dimmed by intelligent control system.

Color Temperature Choice: LED industrial lights provide a variety of color temperature choices such as warm white, neutral white and cool white, choose the right color temperature according to the needs, warm color is suitable for creating a warm atmosphere, while cool color is suitable for improving work efficiency.

Different Scenarios And Needs

Warm white (<3500K): with lower color temperature and more red light components, it can give people a warm and comfortable feeling. It is suitable for families, houses, dormitories, hotels or places with lower temperature to create a cozy atmosphere.

Neutral white (3500K-4500K): Neutral white light is soft and pleasant, giving people a sense of tranquility, suitable for stores, hospitals, offices, restaurants, waiting rooms and other places, providing people with a comfortable lighting environment.

Cool white (>4500K): a daylight source close to natural light, with a bright feeling, helps to improve people's attention and alertness. Suitable for offices, meeting rooms, classrooms, workshops, warehouses and other places that require concentration and bright lighting.

Color Rendering

Proper color rendering of led is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing an led lighting. led lighting are available in different CRI (Color Reproduction Index). If your industrial facility has high visual requirements, you may choose a CRI of 80 or 90, while for general lighting needs, a CRI of 70 is usually sufficient for basic requirements.

These are just a few of the reasons why you should choose led lights. Now, let's dive into the buyer's guide for led high bay lights to make sure you are able to choose the best fixture for your needs.

When choosing led industrial lights, we need to consider the following factors:

Lighting standards for buildings (industrial areas): Different types of premises require different levels of lighting to meet their specific needs. For example, in a retail store, where bright lights are needed to attract customers, the floor needs to be at least 500 lux. The same applies to workshop, warehouse and gym lighting.

Requirements of the working environment: Depending on the working environment, it is important to choose the right light intensity. For example, a high precision machining shop requires a higher level of lighting (around 500 lux) to improve the working environment and efficiency of the workers. For an ordinary machine shop, a lower level of lighting (about 300lux) can be chosen to meet the basic working needs.

Retrofit Area Requirements: If you are planning to retrofit an area, it is important to consider the specific lighting needs of that area. For example, in a warehouse, a lower level of lighting (approx. 200lux) may be required in a transfer or storage area, while a higher level of lighting (approx. 300lux) may be required in a work area to ensure safety and efficiency.

According to the Chinese standard GB50034, the following are the lighting standards for different application locations:

Workshop (precision machining): Average illuminance requirement is 500 lux, calculated area factor is 0.75, UO is 0.7, color rendering index is 80, and glare level is 22.

Workshop (general machinery): Average illuminance requirement of 300 lux, calculated area factor of 0.75, UO of 0.6, color rendering index of 70, glare rating of 22.

Warehouse: Average illuminance requirement of 200 lux, calculated area factor of 1.00, UO of 0.6, color rendering index of 70, and glare rating of 22.

Wattage and Lumens

Selecting the proper wattage and lumen output for led highbay fixtures ensures that the proper lighting levels and energy efficiency ratios are achieved at different mounting heights. Below are examples of recommended lumen outputs and corresponding wattage ranges for different mounting heights:

For 12-16 foot mounting heights, the recommended lumen output range is 12,000 to 15,000 lumens. At an efficiency of 150lm/W, the recommended wattage range is 80w to 100w.

With a mounting height of 18-23 feet, the recommended lumen output range is 16,000 to 23,000 lumens. At 150lm/W efficiency, the recommended wattage range is 120w to 150w.

Recommended lumen output ranges from 25,000 to 36,000 lumens at 25-35 foot mounting heights. At 150lm/W efficiency, the recommended wattage range is 150w to 240w.

Once the wattage, light spacing, and illumination distribution are determined, it becomes easy to ascertain the required number of fixtures, which may vary based on the size of the space and lighting requirements. Lighting simulation tools can be used for precise calculations to ensure the lighting needs are met. If further assistance or consultation is needed, our optical engineers are available to help.

Example

Suppose a warehouse with dimensions of 40 x 60 meters needs lighting upgrades. The current lights are positioned 27 feet above the ground. You are considering replacing the old lighting with either 200W or 150W high bay ufo lights. Which solution is more suitable, and how many fixtures do you need, along with their spacing?

For the standard solution, you can choose 200W, 120-degree beam angle, mounted at a height of 27 feet, with fixtures spaced 27 feet apart.

For the energy-saving solution, you can use our 150W 2835 LED lights, with spacing also at 27 feet, yielding the same results.

For a higher brightness solution, you can opt for 200W lights with closer spacing, typically around 20 feet. This means you'll need more fixtures.

Project Reference

Determining the required number of led high bay lights is a critical aspect of establishing high-ceiling warehouses. Proper illumination planning is essential for these spaces. As a leading expert in the llighting field, Kinlights can guide you in estimating the required quantity of led high bay lights.

Two scenarios determine the required lighting quantity: retrofitting existing fixtures and new installations.

For retrofit projects:

Consider the total lumens produced by the existing fixtures and opt for a one-to-one replacement approach. For instance, if there are 10 100W metal halide lamps, each with an efficiency of 80lm/W, producing a total of 800,000 lumens, you'll need approximately 10 40W led high bay lights with an efficiency of 140lm/W, resulting in a total power of only 400 watts. This accounts for some light possibly being trapped within the fixtures and not fully projected. Therefore, for retrofit projects, you'll need the same number of led high bay lights to replace the old MH lights but with lower wattage.

For New Installations:

Focus on lumens rather than wattage and consider the ceiling height:

Heights of 10-15 feet require 10,000 to 15,000 lumens.

Hhts of 15-20 feet require 16,000 to 20,000 lumens.

Heights of 25-35 feet require approximately 33,000 lumens.

The spacing between lights is crucial:

At 15-foot heights, about 12 feet spacing provides adequate lighting, while 15 feet spacing ensures normal illumination.

For 20-foot heights, 18 feet spacing is normal, while 15 feet provides bright lighting.

At 30-foot heights, 25 feet spacing offers comfortable illumination, while 20 feet spacing ensures sufficient brightness.

Based on the above, you can determine the quantity and wattage of led high bay lights needed.eig
